Productivity enhancement on power press machine using SMED methodology

P. Pravin Kumar, Mr. R. Adersh Srinivas

Abstract

To compete in the current business world each and every organization should follow lean principles. This made the organizations to revitalize themselves by marching into different routes like Agile, Lean, TPM, and TQM to keep them competitive. Now a day’s most of the organizations have taken Lean to crush the competition by improving quality, value stream, reduce change over time, leveling the production, reducing capital investment etc. In an Electronics manufacturing company, a press shop is taken in which a power press is used for the production of clamps, which requires quality improvement and set up time reduction to improve the productivity. The main objective is to improve the productivity by reducing the set up time through Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) technique in lean manufacturing. It is possible to reduce the setup times. Excellent results are possible through better teamwork, good order, planning and simple modifications. Single minute exchange of die mainly focuses on recognition of offline and online operations. The SMED technique has proved to be useful to reduce the setup time of power press machine which also reduces the production losses occurring due to changeover process.

Keywords: Power press; SMED; productivity; setup time; offline and online operations.
