Microstructural and Mechanical Behavior of Al6082/SiC/Gr Hybrid Composites

Abstract


The aim involved in designing metal matrix composite materials is to combine the desirable attributes of metals and ceramics. The present work is focused on the study of behavior of aluminum alloy (Al6082) with SiC and graphite (Gr) composites produced by the stir-casting technique. The reinforcement percentage is varied from 5% to 15% in a step of three. Microstructure test, tensile test, and hardness tests are performed on the samples obtained by the stir-casting process. In the present work, the experimental results of the mechanical properties of Al6082–(SiC + Gr) composites are presented. It is observed from the experimental results that the tensile strength and the hardness of the composite increase with increased (SiC + Gr) content in the matrix at the cost of reduced ductility. The percentage elongation is reduced from 8.6 to 5.3 as the reinforcement increases from 0 to 15 wt%.
