Indentation Fracture Toughness of Aluminum6061-Graphite Composites

Saleemsab Doddamani

Abstract

The aim of this work is to study the behavior of Aluminium (6061) with graphite composite produced by the stir casting technique. For the study different composition of the particulate metal matrix composite used is aluminium 6061 with 0, 3, 6, 9% of graphite. The Vickers indentation method was used to determine hardness and indentation fracture toughness for different compositions of aluminium 6061-graphite particulate metal matrix composite. Fracture toughness test was performed on the samples obtained by the stir casting process. Scanning electron microscope is used to know the crack lengths. Vickers indentation experiment, fracture toughness KIC= 10.15 MPa m½ is obtained for Al-9%Gr. The results obtained by experimental and analytical methods agree with each other with a deviation of about 1.5% – 6.2%. There is a good correlation between analytical and experimental values of the fracture toughness.
