Abstract

In this work, finite element simulation of drilling process is performed to study the behavior of twist drill using DEFORM-3D. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the temperature distribution in the drill bit, workpiece and generated chip. A modified Normalized Johnson cook model is considered in this analysis with Northam-Cockroft failure criteria. The workpiece material chosen is AISI 1045 steel. With this analysis using FEM, the drilling process can be well studied without the need for any expensive real-time experimental work.
