Fabrication and Characterization of Orange Peels Reinforced Bio Composite: A Review

Sreejith Sreenivasan

Abstract

Sustainable development of bio-composites is the solution for current ecological imbalance caused by
the petroleum based synthetic materials. Society uses synthetic plastic derived from petroleum-based
resources for everyday activities such as shopping bags, food packaging, and drinking bottles. These
plastics make our daily tasks easier, but due to their non-biodegradable features, the increasing
amounts of their garbage cause land overcrowding and have an impact on the ecology and
ecosystems. Synthetic fibers made up of conventional polymer composites are replaced by
biodegradable fibers resulting into bio-composites. This paper represents an overview about the
development, manufacturing steps, and characterization of orange peel reinforced bio-composite. The
manufacturing methods such as hand layup, injection molding, compression molding etc. have been
covered briefly in this paper. The industrial and commercial application potential of bio-composites
is also included.
