Fatigue Analysis of T-Joint and Transverse Joint Fillet Weld

Sashikant Singha, Trilok Chauhan

Fatigue analysis of the T-joint and transverse joint fillet weld has been conducted in the present paper. Analysis of the stress and deformation generated has been conducted using finite element analysis tool. A three-dimensional T-joint and transverse joint fillet weld including parts like weld toe, weld throat, weld root and weld face have been modelled using design software SolidWorks. Finite element analysis using ANSYS student version has been conducted to study the effect of the loading condition on the stress and deformation. Effects of different loading and boundary conditions have been studied in the present paper. Stress generated in the weld toes have been presented in the present paper. In case of T-joint fillet weld, toes are the areas where maximum stress and distortion has been found. In case of transverse fillet weld maximum stresses occurs in the weld root and weld toe region. FE tool like ANSYS can predict the approximated results which may help the industries while manufacturing of these types welds. Results obtained from the present analysis validate the weld theory of maximum stresses in weld toes and root areas.
