Plates, Shells and Their Composite Structures

Ashish Kumar

Abstract

Review of the impact of large nonlinear deformations on plate and shell response. The approach of
modelling discrete reinforcements and the smeared stiffeners technique suited to stringers with tight
spacing are both presented in relation to the analysis of stiffened plates and shells. The behaviour and
strength of plates and shells are demonstrated to be affected by apertures and cut-outs, both locally
through the localization of stress and globally through the effects on stiffness. In order to understand
the unique physics of these structures, the concepts of composite and sandwich plates and shells are
clarified. This component was built to take into account the piezoelectric sensor and actuator layers'
impacts on stiffness, mass, and electromechanical coupling. Using this component, the effectiveness of
active vibration control of plates and shells with distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators has
been examined. Studies are done on the effectiveness of different control strategies.
