Design and Fabrication of Bench Vice and Toggle Screw Jack

Abstract


Design and analysis is an important aspect for understanding the concept of Engineering. Every component and machine before coming into the market is first designed and analyzed. Designing is the first and foremost step for making any product. A good design will reflect the valuable working of any product. Thus, design becomes a very important tool. The other important part is the fabrication of designed components. Various operations are performed during the fabrication of any machine or machine component. The knowledge of designing and fabrication is very important for any Engineer during his study period as well as during his work lifetime.
In this research project, we have focussed on designing and the fabrication of bench vice and toggle screw jack. All the design calculations are done on the basis of various parameters. Further, the 3D solid modelling of all the components is done on the Creo 3.O software. All the designed components of bench vice and toggle screw jack are fabricated through various manufacturing operations at our college workshop. The material used for the fabrication of bench vice and toggle screw jack is mild steel. For bench vice, hollow box section is used instead of conventional design. The aim is to reduce the weight of the component without much effecting the working capacity of the vice. We have found that there was a 33.33% weight reduction in case of bench vice. Thus, an effort is made to achieve the objectives of the project to fabricate bench vice and toggle screw jack at an optimal cost.
