Impact of Semiconductor Shortage on Automotive Industry

Aniket Maurya, Niraj Gupta

Abstract

The global automotive industry is facing a significant shortage of semiconductors, which has disrupted production and caused delays in the delivery of vehicles to consumers. The insufficiency can be attributed to various factors, one of which is the rising need for electronics in the automotive industry, the global COVID-19 pandemic, and supply chain disruptions. The semiconductors in question are primarily used in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment systems, and electric and hybrid vehicles. The shortage has affected all major automakers and has had a ripple effect on the overall supply chain, with tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers also experiencing delays and disruptions. The impact of the semiconductor shortage on the automotive industry has been significant, with some companies reducing production or temporarily suspending operations due to the lack of availability of these components. The shortage has also led to increased costs for automakers as they scramble to secure limited supplies of semiconductors. There have been efforts to address the semiconductor shortage in the automotive industry, including increasing production capacity, diversifying the supply chain, and implementing inventory management strategies. In conclusion, the semiconductor shortage in the automotive industry is a complex issue with no easy solutions. It is the result of a combination of factors and has had a significant impact on production and the supply chain. Efforts are being made to address the shortage, but it is likely to continue to affect the industry in the near future.
