A Concise of an Interdisciplinary Engineering Design

Krishna Lok Singh, Vedhanarayanan V, Nikhil Kumar C

Abstract

In this technical note, a concise or brief introduction to Interdisciplinary
Engineering Design is presented. An interdisciplinary engineering design is essentially used to
solve critical engineering challenges that involve the coexistence of two or more subjects. An
interdisciplinary approach to engineering design exposes students, engineers/scientists, and
industry partners to a variety of subjects and discourages them from becoming too comfortable
with a single subject/domain. In an application like Landing gear, both subjects of structures and
systems is involved. The power variables of various domains with the effort, flow and static
stages were explained in this paper. In this technical note, the software simulation packages used
in designing interdisciplinary system which can be efficient in designing without wasting the
materials and cost of manufacturing the product rather the efficiency of the system can be
simulated in this software is discussed. Also, illustration of a hybrid electric bicycle with all its
modules explained and working of the components and their interaction expressed in form of
design layout, also the benefits of Pedal Velocity Controller (PVC) and Conventional Supply
Power (CSP) usage in the hybrid E-Bicycle made the battery power consumption economical.
With an example of a hybrid electric bike presented various systems and discussed each of the
modules. The various software packages available to perform this type of activity are listed.
Power variables for several domains along with the constitutive equation for RCI elements are
given. Lastly, concluded stating how the interdisciplinary engineering design benefits the
customer using the control, hydraulic, electrical, and various sub-systems.
