Analysis of Thermodynamic Characteristics of Natural Gas- Hydrogen Mixtures for Applications to Pipeline Transport

Rupsha Bhattacharyya

Abstract

Pipeline transport of blends of hydrogen with natural gas using a nation’s existing gas grid is one proposed way of initiating the transition to hydrogen energy systems on a large scale. These blends containing up to 20% by volume of hydrogen can be used in the transport sector as a fuel in vehicle engines which currently run on natural gas alone. This work will evaluate the thermodynamic and fluid flow characteristics of natural gas-hydrogen blends in steel pipelines with in-house codes. Calculations modules will be developed to evaluate thermodynamic properties of the mixtures using real gas models. Pressure drop characteristics of such flows and the associated booster power requirements will be evaluated. Flow characteristics in straight pipe section as well as converging and/or diverging sections will also be studied. Such studies would be crucial in designing new or retrofitting existing pipeline networks for transporting fuel gas blends.
