Abstract

The sprocket is a very essential part in the transmission of power and motion in most motorcycles. Commonly chain sprockets are manufactured in mild steel. The existing sprocket should be changed regularly between 12,000 km to 15,000 km in vehicles. Chain sprocket has many issues like breaking impacts creates unexpected damages in sprocket teeth also gets wears, Potential reasons for these problems are critical excessive load damage, high effect of transmission load, exorbitant chain wear a long ways past substitution level. To overcome the above issues the carbon sprocket is introduced in this research work. In this research, existing sprocket of motorcycle is compared with the sprocket of carbon fiber. The designed carbon sprocket is analysed and mechanical load bearing test is conducted and compared with mild steel properties. The carbon fiber sprocket is made up of using Hand lay-up technique. The objective of this research work is the mild steel material is replaced by carbon fiber material. The carbon fiber sprocket is providing better wear resistance also weightless. The load bearing strength is high in the carbon fiber material compared with mild steel, due to the life of the sprocket will increased. This research work covers the design, analysis, fabrication and testing of carbon sprocket for transmission applications
