Abstract

In the present work, an elastic and elasto-plastic behaviour of ASTM A588 structural beam of I-section has been carried out. The cantilever beam model of I-cross section has been created in the finite element simulation software ABAQUS. In the elastic behaviour study, the model has been simulated in the elastic region. After that, the model has been extended to an elasto- plastic analysis by incorporating the plastic strain in the analysis. The various parameters such as von Mises stress, spatial displacement, plastic strain component and reaction force at the fixed end are studied. The result shows that the reaction force is maximum at the fixed end and the maximum displacement at the free end of the beam. The maximum plastic strain occurred near the fixed end and the minimum plastic strain in the free end. It is also observed that in an elasto-plastic analysis the plastic strain is dominated the elastic strain in the same location in a beam. Due to this the facture occurs in that locations.
