Application of Taguchi Technique to reduce Casting Defects

Vijaykumar H K, M.S. Uppin

Abstract

This paper is related to the casting defects like pinholes, blow holes, shut due to cold, outer layer defect, contraction defect even also entrant & riser faults which mainly occur in bushes and valves castings in non-ferrous foundry. In this study we have used Taguchi Technique to minimize the casting fault by changing various parameters like temperature of pouring, green potency, mould rigidity and permeability of Tin Bronze. These testing were carried out based on paradigm tolerable and foundry men familiarity in this foundry organization for casting of valves. In this study the data of casting faults were obtained from Rapsri Engineering Private Limited, Bengaluru. The major defects founded in the valves were scab, shut due to cold and shrinkage. The four factors responsible for these casting defects were Pouring Temperature, Sand Particle Size (AFS), Mould Hardness Number and Permeability Number. The Taguchi Technique was used by utilizing MINITAB 18 software to locate the optimum elucidation. The optimum solution obtained were functional on casting process and the calculated the proportion denial of the valves. Therefore the result obtained showed that there was reduction of casting defects by significant value.
