Computation of SERR Parameters for an Embedded Delamination in Composite Panels under Compression Loading

Krishna Lok S., Dattaguru B.

Abstract

In this paper, computation of the three Strain Energy Release Rate (SERR) components along the delamination front of an embedded delamination in a laminated composite is presented. Inter and intra laminate de-laminations that occur in composite structures are discussed. Inter layer delamination is an important damage in these configurations and is addressed in computational part. The geometric nonlinear finite element analysis is carried out on the composite panel under compressive loading. The SERR components are computed using Modified Virtual Crack Closure Integral (MVCCI). In a mixed-mode situation the MVCCI technique is capable of estimating individual mode values of SERR components. To take care of the non-linearity, FEA results are obtained with the compressive loading increased in incremental steps and from the results empirical relations in the form of polynomials have been computed. The fourth order polynomials match the trend with the computed SERR parameters.
