Abstract

Metal-matrix composites have a metal or an alloy as the continuous phase, in which the reinforcing phase (particle whisker, short or continuous fiber) is distributed. Important techniques for processing metal matrix composites are described. Metal-matrix composites are generally differentiated by features of the reinforcement: particle reinforced MMCs, short fiber or whisker-reinforced MMCs, and continuous fiber or layered MMCs.
