Abstract

In industries, different types of fixtures are used to hold and support the workpiece according to requirements to ensure dimensional accuracy during machining. This paper presents the solution for an industrial problem to develop a single fixture for machining of an end cap of a two-for-one (TFO) twister machine. Currently, two different fixtures are used for performing different operations on the end cap in a horizontal and vertical position on the vertical machining center (VMC). As the setup of fixture and component is done manually, loading and unloading time are more which results in higher cycle time. The main objective of this paper is to develop a fixture that can replace two fixtures with a reduction in setup time and labor work as well as improvement in the production rate. A new fixture is designed and manufactured according to requirements. The comparative analysis of the existing and newly developed fixture showed a reduction in weight and setup time by 22.61% and 34.09% respectively.
