Analysis and Fabrication of Go-Kart

Abstract


Go-Kart (GK) is a type of open-wheel car which can be fabricated in all shapes and forms, from motorless models to high powered racing machines. GK is also called as miniature of a racing car. In the present work the chassis of GK has been framed with AISI1020 square pipe with 2 mm thickness. This may be attributed to the constraint that the GK should be of suspension free, therefore the chassis material must be flexible enough to work as a suspension and stiff enough not to break or give away on a turn. The material has 395 MPa and 200 GPa as tensile strength and Young’s modulus respectively. The GK is powered by Bajaj 125cc engine fitted with dual disc brake. The static structural analysis of the frame has been done by using ANSYS R16.2 software. Loads are calculated theoretically and applied on the frame at critical points to calculate the amount of deformation and stress generated at the time of collision. Impact tests from front, side, rear and torsion has also been done with an impact speed of 80, 65, 80 km/hour, respectively. The total deformation (in mm) in front, side and rear is found to be 0.152, 1.151 and 0.143, when 3030, 2468.18 and 3030 N load applied on respective sides. An average factor of safety of magnitude 6.5 has also maintained throughout the analysis. The applications of such vehicles are in Kart racing, amusement activities and sometimes personal transportation in some countries.
