Material Handling Equipment for Flexible Manufacturing System

Abstract


Material handling equipment plays a vital role in design and development of advance manufacturing systems (AMS) like flexible manufacturing systems. Material handling equipment affects the performance and productivity of these advance manufacturing systems. So, it becomes very important to select a right kind of equipment while designing the high end manufacturing systems like FMS. This paper presents a classification scheme for FMS tasks. Towards making a classification scheme the work system characteristics are examined and the important dimensions from those are identified that are able to differentiate the nature of FMH exposure. A qualitative judgment on exposure magnitude and measurement cost is made. Finally, critical issues and scope for research is presented.
