Improvement of Mechanical Properties of AA2024 by Stir Casting Technique

Pardeep Sharma

Abstract

SiC was used as reinforcement; while AA2024 alloy was metal matrix for developing composite material. Different weight percentages of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 of SiC particles of size 30 μm was used to develop composite materials for investigation. Composites were manufactured by liquid casting technique. The hardness and tensile strength of material was improved from 52 VHN to 75 VHN and from 163 MPa to 190 MPa respectively; with increase in the SiC contents from 0 % to 8 wt. %. Also a decrease in ductility from 8.5 to 5.4 was observed with the increase in SiC contents.
