Analysis and Evaluation of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) in Jute industry: A case study

TUSHAR RANJAN BORA, Dr. Parimal Bakul Barua

Abstract

In the generation of agile manufacturing, the machines and its functions are also becoming complex. In such a scenario, Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of a machine plays a significant role where delivery and quality are of foremost importance to the customer. OEE is an abstraction where the bottleneck actions of a particular process are diminished to a certain extent. OEE has emerged as the methodology of choice for manufacturers to uniformly and consistently measure the key factors that directly affect productivity and efficiency. The three parameters viz. equipment’s availability, performance efficiency of the process and quality rate of products are taken up for this purpose. OEE is expressed as a product of these three parameters. In this case study, an attempt has been made to understand and investigate the roles of various machines utilised in the production flow of a manufacturing Jute industry and calculating the existing OEE for all the machines using a systematic approach. As existing OEE which was evaluated for all the twenty-two machines in the production process over a period of four weeks was found to be lower than the world class OEE (85%), so the future scope of the project lies in analyzing and sorting out the root causes of losses that are taking place in the production flow and hence minimizing the breakdowns, increasing performance and quality rate of machines by implementing Industrial Engineering techniques like TPM, 5s, DMAIC etc. thereby improving the Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
