Protonibea Diacanthus Fish Scales for Manufacturing of Bio-composite: A Review

Sreejith Sreenivasan

Abstract

In recent days, the petroleum by-products like carbon fibres and glass fibres are widely used in
construction and automotive industries. These products are harmful for human being and
environment as the manufacturing of such fibres evolves a lot of poisonous gases. A Bio-composite is
a composite material fabricated by a matrix (resin) and natural fibers as reinforcement. On the basis
of this requirement, composite materials have been developed. Vegetable, mineral, and animal fibres
are examples of natural fibres. The vast number of natural fibres available in India is underutilised.
Fish production in India is 95.7 lakhs tonnes per year, with 7.34 lakhs tonnes of fish scale generated
but not used. In this study, an attempt was made to design, develop, and test the feasibility of using
fish scale in the form of flakes or short fibres in polymer composites. Our project is about fabrication
and characterization of a Bio-composite material using scales of Ghol Fish (Protonibea diacanthus)
as reinforcement fibre and Epoxy Resin as matrix material. The method we will use for fabrication is
Hand-Layup method. Later the fabricated material will be tested for different mechanical properties
such as tensile, flexural and impact.
